News Release - March 8, 1996 OFFICIAL TURN OVER CEREMONY FOR CUMBERLAND HOUSE REMOTE HOUSING PROGRAM
Carol Teichrob, minister responsible for Saskatchewan Municipal
Government, today presented deeds to 11 families who built homes in Cumberland House under The Remote Housing Program. Other officials attending the ceremony at Cumberland House were: Lloyd Reekie, representing Diane Marleau, minister responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing; and Keith Goulet, MLA for Cumberland. "In 1994 the federal government announced a strategic initiative to address housing needs in communities with no year-round road, rail or ferry access," Reekie said. "This initiative, known as The Remote Housing Program, addresses emergency housing needs in northern Canadian communities. The northern Saskatchewan community of Cumberland House met the federal requirements, allowing it to build 11 homes." "Northerners live in dwellings that are severely overcrowded and lack basic services such as water and sewer," Teichrob said. "The province was pleased to work with the federal government and the community to develop this pilot project. Clients, families and friends worked together to build these homes. This is proof that northerners are taking a leadership role in developing solutions to community concerns. Northerners have little opportunity to address their housing needs as there is a severe shortage of housing and virtually no private market." Saskatchewan Municipal Government Housing Division is cost-sharing The Remote Housing Program delivery on a 75/25 per cent federal/provincial basis. The province is responsible for co-ordination and supervision of the entire project. The program is also receiving donations of land and services from the Village of Cumberland House, labour training initiatives from the New Careers Corporation and community or applicant labour contributions. -30- For more information, contact: Doug Parker Maureen Boyle Acting Branch Manager Manager of Communications CMHC Municipal Government Saskatoon Regina Phone: (306) 975-4900 Phone: (306) 787-5959 |
