2ND ANNUAL HERITAGE POSTER COMPETITION

Four Saskatchewan students have won awards for their hand-crafted artwork in the second annual Heritage Poster Contest for Saskatchewan Students.

The award recipients are:

-- Lisa Smith, Grade 11 student from Wynyard, Grades 10-12 category;

-- Zoe Brewster, Grade 8 student from Bulyea, Grades 7-9 category;

-- Madison Forester, Grade 6 student from North Battleford, Grades 4-6 category; and

--Taylor Gardner, Grade 3 French student from Yorkton, Grades 1-3 category.

Lieutenant-Governor Dr. Lynda Haverstock and Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty presented these awards to recipients at a special ceremony for teachers, family and friends, which was held in the Cumberland Gallery of the Legislative Building.

"As we begin the celebration of our centennial, it is clear that Saskatchewan's true strength is in its people, especially its youth," Haverstock said. "The students' artwork portrayed is a tribute to Saskatchewan as a land of many stories, where settlers worked hard to build something better for their children and our province."

There was an overwhelming response to the Heritage Poster Contest. About 200 students from communities throughout the province submitted entries.

"Each of you has expressed your view about our province and what we value most here," Beatty said. "Your artwork captures the heart and soul of our province."

Students entering the contest created hand-crafted posters illustrating historic places and prepared written statements explaining why the site had historical significance. An independent art jury, made up of members of the Saskatchewan Heritage Advisory Board and the Saskatchewan Arts Board reviewed the entries and selected the awards recipients. To view the artwork, visit the Culture, Youth and Recreation website at www.cyr.gov.sk.ca.

This is the second annual Heritage Poster Contest for Saskatchewan Students co-ordinated by the Heritage Branch of Culture, Youth and Recreation with the assistance of Saskatchewan Learning, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Saskatchewan Heritage Advisory Board.
