CELEBRATE OUR YOUTH

The province is inviting Saskatchewan residents to celebrate the many successes of our young people during International Youth Week May 6 to 12.

Beginning in 1995 as a small grassroots movement in Canada, International Youth Week has since grown into an internationally recognized week.

“Everyday is a day to honour the talents, ideas and abilities of our province’s young people,” Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel said.  “I encourage Saskatchewan people to celebrate and reach out to include young people in our communities.  The ultimate goal is to inspire proactive youth involvement in communities year-round.”

Cities, community groups and schools are encouraged to host activities and projects that engage youth and recognize youth achievements, talents and contributions to the community.  Young people are urged to take an active role in the planning and development of these events and ensure their voices are heard.

Through programs like the Saskatchewan Youth Project Awards, young people have enjoyed the opportunity to create and deliver projects that provide youth-identified value to their community.  With the overwhelming response from this year’s call for applications, communities all over the province will once again benefit from the enthusiasm and passion of youth.

“Our government is committed to making life better for our young people now and into the future,” Hagel said.  “Saskatchewan youth are our province’s greatest natural advantage and we need the innovation, skills and vision of youth to continue making Saskatchewan the best province in which to live, work and raise a family.”

Leadership opportunities continue to grow in Saskatchewan and young people are accepting the responsibility of these roles.  The Provincial Youth Advisory Committee is invaluable in advising Government on a multitude of issues relating to youth.  It has been instrumental in the development of government programs and policies that support youth leadership, community involvement and quality workforce participation.
