SASKATCHEWAN EXPANDS CALL FOR EQUALIZATION FAIRNESS

Premier Lorne Calvert today launched a public awareness campaign to provide information to Saskatchewan people about equalization.

"A fair equalization deal is about making life better today for families and building a better future here for our youth," Calvert said. "It's important that Saskatchewan people understand the impact this could have on their lives. That would amount to about $800 million a year in additional funds retained for the people of Saskatchewan. We will use this money to make further investments that will strengthen the economy, create long-term employment and help retain youth."

The campaign features newspaper ads in daily and weekly newspapers providing information on equalization and asking them to read a brochure that will be coming to them the week of October 23rd, or to check out the website www.imaginesask.ca. The brochure provides information about equalization while more detail and technical information is on the website. People who want to read the brochure now can download it from the website. The site will be updated as the issue develops.

"Saskatchewan people deserve getting accurate information on this important issue provided in a straightforward manner," Calvert added. "People of Saskatchewan expect their governments to work together on their behalf and we expect the federal government to live up to its campaign promise on equalization in a timely manner. Saskatchewan deserves the same opportunity that other provinces have to invest their one-time energy revenues into building for the future."

The campaign cost is approximately $300,000.
