DECEMBER 3 IS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Saskatchewan is joining with peoples and governments across Canada and around the world to once again observe December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

"This important day helps raise the visibility of people with disabilities in our communities, and promotes a better understanding of disability issues among all Saskatchewan people," Social Services Minister June Draude said. "Our government looks forward to continuing to work with our partners in the disability community to ensure the rights of people with disabilities and help integrate people with disabilities into every aspect of the social, political, economic and cultural life of our province."

The theme for this year's observance, chosen by the United Nations, is Together for a better world for all: Including persons with disabilities in development.

"The 2011 theme resonates very well in Saskatchewan with the ongoing development of the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability or SAID program," Draude said. "SAID has been a truly collaborative process between the disability community and government from day one. This new, dignified and separate income support program will potentially benefit up to 10,000 people with disabilities."

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities has been observed around the world every year on December 3 since 1981.
