THREE NEW COMMUNITY REFERENCE PANELS IN THE NORTH

New Community Reference Panels in Sandy Bay, Pinehouse, and Ile a la Crosse will provide a voice and feedback mechanism around social programs for people in those communities.

Community Reference Panels are a unique collaboration of community-based organizations, clients of Saskatchewan Community Resources and Employment, and other community stakeholders. The panels provide advice to government departments and local service providers. They also provide a forum for exchanging information and planning around community development and integrated human services at a local level.

"Good results have come from the pilot panels in Beauval and Cumberland House," Community Resources and Employment Minister Glenn Hagel said during a visit to Cumberland House. "The province remains committed to sharing and collaborating to ensure social programs address the needs of people in northern Saskatchewan."

New North CEO Al Loke said he was pleased to see Community Reference Panels established in communities that have a significant need. "We will take what we've learned from the pilot panels to effect positive change in the communities of Sandy Bay, Pinehouse, and Ile a la Crosse."

In July, northern communities were invited to apply to be considered for a Community Reference Panel. Representatives of New North and Saskatchewan Community Resources and Employment reviewed applications and identified the three new communities to receive Community Reference Panels. The next steps include identifying and selecting coordinators and panel members for each community, as well as providing training.

The Northern Human Services Partnership, an intersectoral group comprised of 22 stakeholders in northern Saskatchewan, will help fund the new Community Reference Panels with $60,000 annually over five years. The two panels in Beauval and Cumberland House will also continue to receive funding.

The work of the pilot panels is consistent with the province's strategic goals of Building Independence through economic independence and self-reliance, ultimately benefiting all Saskatchewan people.
