INCREASES ON THE MANUFACTURING FRONT

Saskatchewan's manufacturing shipments continue to climb in April 2008 according to Statistics Canada's latest Monthly Survey of Manufacturers.

On a seasonally unadjusted basis, Saskatchewan's manufacturing shipments were up 14 per cent to $987 million in April 2008 when compared with April 2007. This was the fourth highest percentage increase in Canada. There was a 2.6 per cent decrease on a national level.

"Manufacturing is a vital part of Saskatchewan's economy that is providing more jobs and opportunities for Saskatchewan people," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "There are a wide range of products produced in Saskatchewan, and more importantly, manufacturing businesses that are noted for being innovative and successful entrepreneurs."

Seasonally adjusted, Saskatchewan was one of seven provinces that recorded an increase from March 2008 to April 2008. Saskatchewan's percentage increase was eight per cent, the third highest in Canada, and four times the national percentage increase of two per cent.
