NEARLY ONE-THIRD OF THE 2003 CROP SEEDED

Nearly one-third of the 2003 crop has been seeded, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization's weekly crop report.

Producers have seeded 32 per cent of the 2003 crop, behind the five-year (1998-2002) average of 59 percent.

Seeding is most advanced in the west central region with 45 per cent of the crop in the ground. The southeast region is least advanced with only 19 per cent of the crop seeded, a delay caused by surplus topsoil moisture.

The southwest and east central regions are also experiencing topsoil moisture surpluses in fields.

Despite continued moisture surpluses, southeast, southwest and east central regions enjoyed some drying winds during the past week, although some east central areas saw showers and snow.

Pasture conditions are improving across the province with grass and hay lands greening. In some areas, community pastures have opened and livestock have been placed on summer pastures.

Cold temperatures and overnight frosts continue to be a problem for farmers in all regions of the province. Some producers are waiting for warmer weather and drier fields before they continue seeding and field work. Although the constant wind is helping to dry surplus topsoil moisture, it is slowing spraying progress.
