News Release - March 15, 2010 CELEBRATING LA FRANCOPHONIE IN SASKATCHEWANToday Provincial Secretary June Draude proclaimed March 5-21 as Les Rendez-vous de la Francophonie 2010 in Saskatchewan. During these two weeks Saskatchewan Francophones and French speakers will join millions of others from all over the country to celebrate Canada's French culture and heritage. "French culture and language has been present in Saskatchewan for more than a hundred years," Draude said. "The language is carried by a proud and vibrant community that has built itself a place in our history and in our future. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to explore the traditions and culture of the French community in Saskatchewan. I know we will continue to celebrate the French culture and heritage for years to come." Celebrations are held annually in March throughout Canada to promote French language and Francophone culture and to coincide with the International Day of La Francophonie on March 20. This year's focus is to bring Francophones and French-speakers closer together by inviting them to discover more about our country's different Francophone regions and communities. In Saskatchewan many activities will take place around the province. There are 9.5 million French-speakers in Canada and almost 50,000 in Saskatchewan.
