News Release - May 4, 2011 EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WEEK URGES FAMILIES TO BE PREPAREDSaskatchewan joins jurisdictions across Canada in hosting Emergency Preparedness Week, May 1 to 7 under the banner of "72 hours...Is your family prepared?" "The theme recognizes that in a disaster, some services that we take for granted might be unavailable for several days," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said. "Families should be prepared to take care of themselves for a minimum of 72 hours, and knowing what to pack in an emergency kit can help." In partnership with the federal government and other provinces and territories, resources to help families and individuals develop their own emergency plans have been distributed to some 1,500 key community responders in Saskatchewan. These materials include a brochure and a 72-hour emergency kit guide. In Saskatchewan, common emergencies stem from natural disasters such as floods, tornadoes, snow storms and forest fires. A basic emergency kit should include bottled water, non-perishable food, battery-operated flashlight, manual can opener and a first aid kit.
