PRAIRIE NORTH HEALTH REGION RECEIVES FUNDING FOR DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING EQUIPMENT

Prairie North Health Region is receiving over $2 million for diagnostic imaging equipment. The funding is part of the $66 million Saskatchewan received this fiscal year as a result of the 2004 First Ministers' Meeting.

"Diagnostic imaging services are a high priority for the government and the health system," Health Minister John Nilson said. "These purchases will help us to improve the availability and quality of diagnostic imaging services across Saskatchewan. They will also fit well with our developing provincial strategy to organize, streamline and improve these services."

The region will purchase two new CT scanners, one for North Battleford and the other to be located in Lloydminster and cost-shared with the Alberta government. The remainder of the funding will be used for items such as two new X-ray machines, and computerized radiography readers that provide digital capabilities.

"Prairie North Health Region is excited to be able to proceed with introduction of CT scan services in The Battlefords and Lloydminster, as set out in the December 2001 Action Plan for Saskatchewan Health Care," Prairie North Health Region Chairperson Bonnie O'Grady said. "Our communities and the health region as a whole are eagerly anticipating implementation of the service which will greatly enhance timeliness and access to this important diagnostic tool."

"These investments will have a direct benefit to the community and the health region through enhanced access to timely diagnostic services," Government Relations Minister and Battlefords MLA Len Taylor added.

"It is also very significant for us to move further into the digital environment with our diagnostic imaging services, improving efficiency and effectiveness for staff and patients," Prairie North Health Region CEO David Fan said.

Diagnostic imaging services include (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tests, X-rays, and ultrasounds.
