CROP REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING JUNE 5, 2005

Seeding of the 2005 crop is now 93 per cent complete, just below the five-year average of 96 per cent, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food's weekly crop report.

Topsoil moisture conditions on crop land were rated as adequate by 71 per cent of crop reporters, and 80 per cent rated topsoil moisture conditions on hay and pasture land as adequate.

Heavy rainfall, particularly in eastern areas of the province, caused flooding and left surplus topsoil moisture. Seeding and weed control operations were halted in these areas.

Across the province, spring cereal development is rated normal by 57 per cent of reporters, with 41 per cent rating development as behind. Oilseed development is rated as normal by 51 per cent of reporters; pulse crops are rated as normal by 58 per cent of reporters; and fall cereal development is rated as normal by 72 per cent of reporters.

More than 80 per cent of all crops are rated in good to excellent condition.

During the past week, flooding caused the most crop damage. Other sources of crop damage included frost, wind, drought, hail, insects (flea beetles, cut worms, wire worms), disease (tan spot) and gophers. Spraying is underway as weather conditions allow.
