TRAINING LEADERS IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE

The Saskatchewan Public Service Commission (PSC) has begun working with the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy to provide executive and policy development training for ministry managers and policy staff.

"This partnership will provide outstanding opportunities for the members of our public service to develop their professional abilities," Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission Wayne Elhard said. "Our goal is to have the most skilled and innovative public service possible in order to provide the highest degree of service to the people of Saskatchewan. Expanded learning and training opportunities are required to maintain and pursue excellence in this sector."

The PSC will enter into a formal agreement with the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, which has campuses at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina. The government has committed $250,000 this fiscal year to develop and launch these programs. This is part of an election commitment to provide $1 million over four years to the school to assist with professional development opportunities for public servants and help educate the next generation of leaders in the province.

This skills development program is an important asset in building the future public service of Saskatchewan. It will feature seminars and workshops specifically targeting the needs of employees in government ministries.

"This commitment for funding was one of our election promises," Elhard said. "I'm pleased that an agreement has been realized between these two agencies."

The PSC is working with officials from Johnson-Shoyama to finalize details. The first programs are expected to be offered later this fall.
