SASKATCHEWAN CENTENNIAL 2005 CONTRIBUTION CREATES KNOWLEDGE LEGACY

As Saskatchewan turns the page on its first century, a new publication celebrating our province and our people will hit bookstands. "The Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan" covers the period before provincial status was achieved as well as our first 100 years as a province.

"The encyclopedia will provide a lasting and factual story about the significant accomplishments of our people, our landscape, our diverse culture and our rich history," Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "This publication creates a legacy of knowledge that will be an invaluable resource for future generations."

The University of Regina's Canadian Plains Research Centre (CPRC) has been working on the encyclopedia for almost 10 years. More than 800 volunteers contributed editorial content. Many student research assistants also contributed to the development of material for the approximate 2,200 entries that are contained in the publication. Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 will contribute up to $300,000 to assist with printing the publication. Saskatchewan Learning will provide a complimentary copy of the Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan to each school in the province.

"This is the most ambitious educational publishing effort ever undertaken in Saskatchewan and the most extensive single collection of information that our province has ever produced," CPRC Executive Director Dr. David Gauthier said. "The encyclopedia captures the breadth of our history and knowledge and showcases Saskatchewan's achievements to the world. It will be a great resource for all people with an interest in our province. We are honoured that Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 is partnering with us to ensure that the Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan is published during our centennial year."

The encyclopedia will be available for sale in the fall at a cost of $125.
