EXPANDING ENVIRONMENTALLY PREFERRED POWER GENERATION

As part of the government's Green Power Portfolio, SaskPower is calling for Expressions of Interest for innovative and viable projects for smaller, environmentally preferable electrical power generation. Letters have been sent to a wide range of organizations, businesses, individuals and communities.

"Environmentally Preferred Power is part of the government's Green Power Portfolio, to ensure that all of Saskatchewan's new electricity needs over the next 4-5 years are met from environmentally friendly sources, whose operations do not add to greenhouse gas emissions," Minister Responsible for SaskPower Andrew Thomson said.

Interested parties have until September 25th, 2003 to provide business information and a basic overview of their projects. Those that submit their names and meet the requirements will be included in the solicitation and consultation process. Businesses with viable projects will be asked to respond to a formal Request for Proposal later this fall. Eligible technologies may include flare gas, wind, low-impact hydro, biomass, biogas, heat recovery from an existing waste heat source and solar. The first projects are expected to be in service in 2005.

"Today's announcement is a major part of the Green Power Portfolio, which also includes a new 150 megawatt windpower partnership with ATCO Power, the recent expansion of the Cypress Wind Power Facility, and community energy efficiency pilot projects which have already begun in Watrous and Lanigan," Minister Responsible for the Office of Energy Conservation Peter Prebble said.

Later this fall, after potential projects have been identified through the Expression of Interest process, SaskPower intends to issue a formal Request for Proposal to solicit up to 15 megawatts (MW) of Environmentally Preferred Power for the first year of the three-year initiative. SaskPower expects to announce its selection of the first set of Environmentally Preferred Power projects by the spring of 2004. Solicitations will then continue annually until 2005, ultimately resulting in up to 45 MW over three years of environmentally preferred electrical generation.
