"Volunteers are the foundation of our democracy," Barnhart said. "The astonishingly generous individuals who have been selected to receive the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal have made service a priority, and through the gift of their time, they have had an extraordinary impact."

The 2009 recipients are:
• Jack Ambler, Regina
• Dennis F. Bleier, Prince Albert
• Sergeant Keith W. Briant, Saskatoon
• Denis C. Chisholm, Regina
• Sidney A. Katzman, Saskatoon
• Marie Knutson, Eston
• Judy Lyons, Regina
• Thelma R. Poirier, Glentworth

The recipients will receive their awards on April 28, following National Volunteer Week, at Government House in Regina. Recipients are selected by the Saskatchewan Honours Advisory Council from nominations submitted by the public. Including the ten new recipients, the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal has been presented to 130 outstanding individuals since 1995. Saskatchewan has the highest rate of volunteerism in Canada.
