SASKATCHEWAN PEOPLE CARE ABOUT THEIR HERITAGE

Across Saskatchewan heritage projects are benefiting from the work of caring and committed people.

As part of Heritage Day celebrations Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford attended two events today. The first recognized community leaders who are supporting the Claybank Brick Plant Historical Society. At the second, she presented a cheque to assist with a heritage building restoration in Regina.

"Our heritage buildings are a public treasure," Crofford said. "Private donors and community support are vital to preserving them."

SaskTel's Telephone Pioneers are contributing a cash donation and volunteer labour to provide a programming room in the Claybank Brick Plant's old bunkhouse. Jacqui Shumiatcher is funding a children's educational program that compares the remarkably similar processes of making and baking of bricks at Claybank to the making and baking of pies in the bunkhouse.

"Jacqui Shumiatcher and the SaskTel Pioneers seized the great potential of the Claybank site," Crofford said. "We thank them for their vision and support."

As Minister for the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation, Crofford also presented a matching grant of $40,000 to the owners of a Regina landmark.

The former Canada Life Building in downtown Regina is a designated provincial heritage property. It was completed in 1914 and is one of our finest early 20th century commercial buildings.

The exterior of the building was meticulously restored to its original condition by The Investors Trust Group, with the help of TGS Harvard Management Services and architect Harry Jedlic.

"Citizens of vision and caring have provided these very valuable contributions to preserving our heritage," Crofford said. "I hope these awards and grants will encourage individuals, organizations and municipalities to consider taking on heritage projects in recognition of Saskatchewan's centennial celebration in 2005."
