News Release - October 27, 2006 NATIONAL 4-H MONTH PROCLAIMED IN SASKATCHEWAN
Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman today proclaimed the month of November as 4-H Month in Saskatchewan.
"4-H is an outstanding educational program for Saskatchewan's rural and urban youth," Wartman said. "The program encourages youth to 'Learn to do by doing,' which is the 4-H motto. 4-H also emphasizes service to community and development of leadership ability," Wartman said. "Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food supports 4-H programming with annual grants. This is one step our government takes to build a better future for Saskatchewan youth." 4-H programs provide youth with the opportunity to participate in various projects in a variety of areas including beef cattle production and management, light horse husbandry, woodworking, canine rearing, caring and training, photography, gardening, drama and wildlife. Club members can also participate in public speaking competitions, provincial curling, and international travel and can apply for a number of scholarships available for post secondary education. The Government of Saskatchewan has supported the 4-H program since 1917 when the first clubs were formed in Colgate, Dubuc and Tantallon. Today, there are about 224 clubs in Saskatchewan with about 3,700 members between the ages of six and 21 and about 1,100 leaders. Next year, Saskatchewan 4-H celebrates its 90th anniversary with numerous activities to be undertaken by the various clubs. Wartman praised the dedication of 4-H leaders across the province, whose enthusiasm has ensured that 4-H programs have continued over the years. "Saskatchewan's 4-H leaders volunteer their time to lead and to teach," Wartman said. "They are helping to build strong Saskatchewan youth by encouraging them to attempt new challenges." For more information about the 4-H program in Saskatchewan, contact the Saskatchewan 4-H Council in Saskatoon at (306) 933-7727 or visit the website at www.4-h.sk.ca. The observation coincides with National 4-H Month held across Canada. 4-H stands for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. -30- For More Information, Contact:
