CALVERT ENCOURAGES SUMA DELEGATES TO INVOLVE YOUTH IN PROVINCE’S DIRECTION

Premier Lorne Calvert today called upon members of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) to seek ways of involving youth in setting municipal direction and decision making.

Calvert, who spoke at the annual SUMA convention today after participating in the province’s Youth Summit over the weekend, encouraged delegates to appoint youth members to their councils stressing it as an important step in building a youth friendly Saskatchewan and better future for families in the province.

“If we are going to retain our young people, bring our young people home or bring youth to our province, we need to have their input at the table and listen to their voices,” Calvert said.  “We need to provide forums to share enthusiasm, their skills and their hopes.  Such involvement also provides valuable learning for this province’s leaders of tomorrow.”

Calvert told SUMA delegates his government’s vision is to work with them to establish an Urban Agenda within a Municipal Sector Plan.

“We are not dissimilar in Saskatchewan with every Canadian jurisdiction, in fact with every North American jurisdiction,” Calvert said.  “We are becoming increasingly urbanized.  Young people, young families, young aboriginal people, new immigrants and immigrant families are moving to urban areas.  Our towns and cities are more and more becoming centres of regional activity, offering amenities to a region.”

Calvert praised SUMA for the role municipalities have played in building a strong economy.  He called upon delegates to unite in pushing for a fair deal on equalization from the federal government.

He commended municipalities for helping to spread the word about Saskatchewan’s quality of life, making life better for our families and building a bright future for our youth.

“When it comes to speaking out for Saskatchewan, we can not be quiet,” Calvert said.  “We need to stand up and stand together to make sure our story is told.
