PROVINCE AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PROVIDE A HOME FOR REGINA FAMILY

A Habitat for Humanity Regina partner family now has a safe place to call home, thanks to $50,000 in financial assistance from the Government of Saskatchewan through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC). The keys were presented to the new homeowners at a special ceremony held today in Regina.

"Saskatchewan Housing Corporation is proud to continue a partnership with Habitat for Humanity that is helping to give struggling families a safe and stable home and to build sustainable communities," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "This home, and other Habitat for Humanity builds, takes us another step down the road to overcoming our challenges in housing availability and affordability. Saskatchewan's strong economy means we can make significant investments where we know we can make a difference."

"We are truly grateful for the support of our partners in the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and our long-time partners at Mosaic and Farm Credit Corporation," Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts said. "It is support from the government and private companies, as well as individuals, that allow us to continue helping families achieve homeownership. The need for stable, affordable housing is greater than it has ever been, and support from the community is key to helping low-income, hard-working families realize the dream of homeownership."

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert and Lloydminster to help build a total of 90 homes across the province. As of March 2012, SHC has advanced $2.35 million of the $4.5 million available to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the province to assist in the delivery of 47 homes for families.

Habitat's distinct delivery model continues to provide homeownership opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals.

Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions. This assists in the development of the Habitat community and their neighbourhood.
