SEPTEMBER 27 – OCTOBER 1 IS DECLARED SASKATCHEWAN MANUFACTURING WEEK

Enterprise Saskatchewan Minister Jeremy Harrison officially declared September 27 - October 1, as Saskatchewan Manufacturing Week at a luncheon in Regina this afternoon.

A presentation on increasing profitability and productivity through marketing strategies by Mr. Ken Wong, Associate Professor at Queen's School of Business, aimed at raising awareness of the industry, helped kick off the week.

"This week provides an opportunity to applaud our home grown expertise in the manufacturing industry," Harrison said. "Saskatchewan manufacturer's produce world class products that are being used across the global marketplace. Their innovative products showcase Saskatchewan's people as world leading innovators, entrepreneurs and competitors."

The manufacturing industry is a significant driver of the provincial economy, accounting for 7.7 per cent of the province's GDP. Foreign exports of Saskatchewan-made products were worth $3.9 billion in 2009. Nearly half of all manufacturing takes place outside of the main centres of Regina and Saskatoon and approximately 30,000 people are employed by the industry.
