PREMIER EXTENDS CONDOLENCES AND ASSISTANCE TO TSUNAMI VICTIMS

Premier Lorne Calvert today extended condolences on behalf of the province and people of Saskatchewan to the victims of this week's massive earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 100,000 people in southern Asia and eastern Africa.

"The human tragedy unfolding in the wake of this catastrophe is unprecedented and especially heartbreaking during this holiday season," Premier Calvert said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims, as well as the hundreds of relief workers who are striving to save lives and lessen the human misery caused by this horrific disaster."

The Premier expressed appreciation for the generous financial response that the people of Saskatchewan have already made, and continue to make, to help the disaster victims. He also announced today that the provincial government will contribute $1 million for both short-term disaster relief and medium-term reconstruction assistance.

The province will provide $900,000 to the Canadian Red Cross Society for immediate disaster relief, and it will flow $100,000 to and through the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation (SCIC) and its member-agencies to begin to address post-emergency rehabilitation and reconstruction needs. The latter will be matched by private donations and is in addition to the funds provided annually to and through SCIC for the operation of the Saskatchewan Emergency Assistance Program.

"Saskatchewan people have always been known for their generosity and compassion. Today, the provincial government is also stepping forward to play its part in helping to meet the dire needs of those affected by this catastrophe", Calvert said. "We will continue to consult with the federal government and SCIC to determine what role we can play as post-emergency reconstruction continues."

A book of condolence to families and friends of the victims has also been placed at the main entrance of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building for signing by members of the public. The book will be available starting Friday, December 31st, 2004 until Friday, January 14th, 2005 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Copies of the book of condolence will be provided to the Embassies of the nations affected by the disaster.
