AFFORDABLE RENTAL HOUSING PROJECT FOR SENIORS OPENS IN PRINCE ALBERT

Four affordable housing units for seniors have been opened in Prince Albert, through a partnership between the province and Prince Albert Community Housing Society Inc. (PACHSI). The province contributed approximately $451,000 toward the total project cost of approximately $644,000, with the funding balance being provided by PACHSI.

"Our government is pleased to work with PACHSI to help create affordable rental homes for seniors in this community who are in need of housing," Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "These homes are another important step forward in improving the supply of affordable housing for seniors in Prince Albert."

"PACHSI is very pleased to have received the necessary funding to construct these four additional affordable rental units for seniors," PACHSI Manager Linda Boyer said. "There is a genuine need in Prince Albert for affordable rental units, and PACHSI has a very committed board of directors, office and maintenance staff who are dedicated and proud of all they have been able to accomplish to date, and enthusiastically look forward to new projects in the future."

PACHSI is a non-profit corporation that owns and manages a housing portfolio of more than 360 subsidized and affordable rental units housing approximately 1,100 Métis and non Métis families, seniors and singles in Prince Albert.

Saskatchewan Housing Corporation continues to work with the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to develop new housing opportunities in Prince Albert. Since November 2007, 128 affordable rental units have been completed in the community, including 22 units for seniors. In addition, four more units for seniors with dependents are under construction.

Located at 1200 - 2nd Street East, the project consists of a one story four-unit garden apartment building with two two-bedroom units and two one-bedroom units.
