SASKATCHEWAN RETAIL TRADE BEST JULY EVER

Saskatchewan Number One in Canada in Retail Sales Growth

Saskatchewan retail sales for July 2008 were at the highest levels ever for the month of July according to a report released by Statistics Canada today.

Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador posted the highest increase in sales among the provinces at 13.7 per cent between July 2007 and July 2008 (seasonally unadjusted). Sales totalled $1.3 billion in our province in July. Nationally, retail sales averaged an increase of 7.7 per cent.

"Record retail sales are a testament to the performance of the Saskatchewan economy, and in turn leads to higher consumer confidence," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "Consumers are comfortable with the opportunities available, and are able to make those purchases knowing this trend will likely continue."

On a seasonally adjusted basis, retail sales in Saskatchewan jumped 0.2 per cent, double the national increase of 0.1 per cent between June 2008 and July 2008. Six out of ten provinces experienced an increase during this period.
