$100,000 IN INCREASED FUNDING FOR SOURCE WATER PROTECTION

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority is providing an additional $100,000 in funding to the Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds to implement source water protection plans.

Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Dustin Duncan made the announcement while speaking to the annual conference of the Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds in Humboldt Monday. The additional $100,000 will provide a 15 per cent increase in the grant to each watershed association to $92,500.

"The importance of good water supplies only increases as our population and economy grow," Duncan said. "Your work to ensure protection of surface and ground water supplies is very important in ensuring a sustainable water supply. I am pleased government is able to announce this additional support."

Eight watershed associations are currently working to implement nine watershed and aquifer protection plans across the province. Each plan was developed by representatives of communities in the watershed and sets out actions to protect water supplies. The watershed associations, which lead implementation of these plans, are also community lead with financial support from Saskatchewan Watershed Authority, local governments and other agencies.

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority leads the management of the province's source water to ensure safe, reliable water supplies.
