PLAQUES AND BOOKLET WILL HONOUR FORMER SASKATCHEWAN PREMIERS

The province of Saskatchewan is honouring its deceased former premiers with bronze plaques to mark their gravesites and a colour booklet profiling their political careers.

A ceremony to unveil the plaques and the booklet was held in the Saskatchewan Gallery at the Legislative Building on Monday.

"The plaques and the booklet celebrate the lives of nine men who left an indelible mark on this province with their passion and dedication to provincial politics," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel said. "They demonstrated an enduring affection for our democratic system of government and a deep love of the province."

The bronze plaques, each bearing a premier's name and term of office, will be permanently placed at the respective gravesites as a sign of honour and appreciation. The booklet, titled "Gravesites of Saskatchewan Premiers", recognizes their accomplishments. It is being produced in both official languages and will be distributed to provincial libraries. French and English versions will be posted on the Culture, Youth and Recreation website.

Attending the ceremony were Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon L. Barnhart and University of Regina Professor of History Dr. William Brennan. Chief of Protocol Deborah Saum was Master of Ceremonies. Family members of the former premiers also attended.
