The province is celebrating Saskatchewan trails by proclaiming June 6, 2009 as Saskatchewan Trails Day.

"Tourism is big business in our province and our recreational trails are a big part of that," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "Saskatchewan Trails Day celebrates the benefits that recreational trails contribute to healthy lifestyles, tourism, economic development and habitat conservation."

"Our province's trails are a valuable resource worth celebrating," Saskatchewan Trails Association President Curt Schroeder said. "Not only do trails provide a space to experience Saskatchewan's beautiful landscape, they also add value to our environment, our economy and our quality of life. Our province's trail network continues to expand, especially the Trans Canada Trail which will, in part, be used in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games Torch Relay. There is certainly a lot to celebrate when it comes to trails, and we are looking forward to hosting another successful Saskatchewan Trails Day."

Saskatchewan communities and organizations are encouraged to celebrate Saskatchewan Trails Day on Saturday, June 6 by holding a trails-related event such as an organized trail walk, a nature art project or a community barbeque.

All organizations who register will be entered in a draw for $1,000. The winning entry will be required to submit a Trails Day activity report.
