SASKATCHEWAN CELEBRATES AGRICULTURE AND FOOD MONTH

Saskatchewan will celebrate the importance of its agriculture and food industry during the month of October.

"This special event affords us an opportunity to look beyond the current headlines to the long and proud history of agriculture in this province, to the industry's important place in Saskatchewan's economy, and to a viable and sustainable future," Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said.

Saskatchewan's agriculture and food industry accounts for $5 to $6 billion in primary production, and an additional $2 to $3 billion in secondary and value added processing. Saskatchewan remains a leader in cereal grain crop production, supplying 10 per cent of the world's international wheat trade, and grows 25 per cent of the world's mustard and flaxseed.

Saskatchewan is the largest producer of pulse crops in Canada, and the leading Canadian exporter of organic grain and oilseed products and cereal-based food ingredients. As well, the provincial livestock industry is expanding at a rapid rate. Saskatchewan is a significant and growing contributor to Canada's position as the second largest hog exporter in the world, and the province boasts the second largest beef herd in Canada. Growth is also taking place in the manufacturing and processing sector.

"Agriculture and Food Month gives us an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the many men and women involved in this exciting industry, and a chance to reflect on the importance of agriculture in all our lives," Wartman said. "I encourage everyone in Saskatchewan to take the opportunity during the month of October to celebrate the province's agriculture and food industry."
