News Release - October 11, 2005 CROP REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 9TH, 2005
Seventy-six per cent of the 2005 harvest is complete, compared to 69 per cent last week and the five-year average of 87 per cent, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food's weekly crop report.
The southwest is furthest along at 97 per cent complete, followed by the southeast at 96 per cent complete. The west central region is least advanced with 38 per cent combined. Provincial winter wheat, fall rye, durum, mustard, pea and lentil crops are all at least 90 per cent combined. Overall, the crop is expected to be below average for quality. Frosts and migratory birds caused the majority of the crop damage during the past week. South eastern areas received snow during the past week, which lodged standing crops. Northern and west central areas are still in a surplus moisture situation. Reporters indicate that it takes very little moisture to stop harvest operations. Some regions expect to finish harvest in the coming week, while others could need at least until the end of October. Those that have finished harvest have begun fall work, including straw baling, hauling bales, rock picking, fertilizer application and harrowing. -30- For More Information, Contact:
