CANCER AGENCY GOVERNANCE MODEL UPDATED

New legislation will bring the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency into line with accountability standards established several years ago for Saskatchewan's regional health authorities, Health Minister Len Taylor told members of the Legislative Assembly today.

Taylor today moved The Cancer Agency Act and The Regional Health Services Amendment Act, 2006, for second reading. Many of the changes to legislation reflect changes in accountability that the Cancer Agency has already made as part of its daily operations.

"This updated legislation also reinforces the contemporary approach to cancer care that sees the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency and the regional health authorities work together to plan, deliver and evaluate cancer services in the province," Taylor said.

The changes reflect current government practice by establishing standard financial, accountability and reporting provisions in line with those that govern health authorities.

The government has significantly increased its investment in cancer prevention and treatment services in recent years. Each year, approximately 4,500 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in Saskatchewan.
