CONSTRUCTION STARTS ON MAPLE CREEK COMPOSITE HIGH SCHOOL

Students, families and staff of Maple Creek Composite High School joined Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz to celebrate the start of the significant renovation and addition to the school at a sod turning ceremony today.

"High quality school facilities that meet the needs of students and their families help to support student achievement," Krawetz said. "The new Maple Creek Composite High school will provide a safe, comfortable and attractive place for students to learn."

Earth-friendly design features have been introduced to lower the environmental impact of the school. Energy efficiency will be improved in the facility by at least 25 per cent. This will also provide better controls and a more comfortable atmosphere for students and staff.

The new Maple Creek Composite High School will support programming for grades six through twelve with an additional 895 square meters of new construction. The existing 4,000 square meters of space will be renovated and restored.

"This is a project that will meet the needs and priorities of the Maple Creek school community," Chinook School Division Board Chair Roland Falk said. "The investment the provincial government has made into school facilities over the past year and a half has been necessary and appreciated."

The total estimated cost of the project is approximately $9.98 million. This includes the Government of Saskatchewan contribution of $4.46 million the Chinook School Division's approved contribution of $3.74 million with an additional $1.51 million from the school division to support a new performing arts stage. An additional $0.27 million will be provided as part of the GST rebate.

Over the past two years, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $303.4 million to move forward 22 major school capital projects including Maple Creek Composite High School, and more than 150 additional, smaller projects in schools across the province.
