WINNERS OF HERITAGE POSTER CONTEST ANNOUNCED

Four Saskatchewan students who have used artwork to depict historical buildings are being honoured today.  Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon L. Barnhart and Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Warren McCall celebrated the winners of the fourth annual Heritage Poster Contest for Saskatchewan Students at the Legislative Building.

“Historic buildings and places provide tangible evidence of how the past, the present and the future are connected,” Barnhart said.  “The Heritage Poster Contest encourages young people to explore something from our past that still exists and has resonance in our communities today.”

This year’s award recipients are:

Primary Category – Carissa Esplin, Grade 1, Balcarres School
Junior Category – Christian Larochelle, Grade 4, Zenon Park School
Intermediate Category – Charlotte Corbett, Grade 7, Bruno School
Senior Category – Mathew Hannigan, Grade 10, North Battleford High School

“When we conserve our heritage, we add cultural and economic value to our communities,” McCall said. “It is wonderful that our young people have the opportunity to explore our shared history which is the foundation of our province.”

Over 100 students in grades one through twelve from communities across the province submitted a hand-crafted poster featuring a historic place in Saskatchewan with a written statement telling why the place is significant to them.  To view the winning art and selection criteria, visit the Culture Youth and Recreation website at www.cyr.gov.sk.ca.

The fourth annual Heritage Poster Contest for Saskatchewan Students is sponsored by the Heritage Resources Branch of Saskatchewan Culture, Youth and Recreation with the assistance of Saskatchewan Learning and the Office of French-Language Co-ordination/Office de co-ordination des affaires francophones.
