INFORMATION FOR BETTER HIGHWAYS

Truck drivers are being asked to help provide information on the trucks that travel Saskatchewan's highways this summer.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation will be conducting a weight survey throughout the province starting this week. The purpose of the survey is to gather current and representative information on truck weights.

"The information gathered by this survey will be invaluable in our ongoing efforts to improve the province's transportation system," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Weight information is a critical component of the department's planning and design processes, so up-to-date vehicle weight information is essential for the province to optimize its investment in the provincial transportation system."

One-day surveys will be conducted during July and August at 15 sites across the province. During a 12-hour period, all trucks passing a survey site - including farm trucks - will be weighed. In addition, other information such as commodity, point of origin, destination and truck type will be recorded.

"A modern and competitive transportation infrastructure is essential to our continued economic and social prosperity," Sonntag said. "This information will ensure the almost $300 million per year the province invests in the transportation system meets the needs of Saskatchewan's people and economy."
