PROVINCE CONTRIBUTES $70,000 TOWARD TREATY 10 CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS

The Calvert government will contribute $70,000 toward Treaty 10 Centennial commemorations.

Northern Affairs Minister Joan Beatty made the announcement today at an event hosted by Tribal Chief Helen Ben of the Meadow Lake Tribal Council.

"The province celebrated Saskatchewan Treaties in March with a ceremony in the Legislative Assembly acknowledging the Treaty relationship and dedicating new symbols in the Legislative Chamber in honour of that relationship," Beatty said. "This contribution is yet another way the Provincial Government has chosen to recognize the importance of Treaties in our Province's history."

"I want to thank Tribal Chief Helen Ben and all Treaty 10 Chiefs for inviting the provincial government into the Centennial commemoration," Beatty added. "It is a real honour and a privilege. The Treaties play an important role in our province's history, and they continue to shape our society today."

On behalf of Premier Lorne Calvert and the Government of Saskatchewan, Minister Beatty extended best wishes to all Treaty 10 First Nations Peoples for a happy and successful Centennial commemoration.

The main event will be August 28th, 2006 in Patuanak, home of the English River First Nation.

The funds will contribute to a number of initiatives, which include researching and producing a Treaty 10 book, hosting a youth canoe trip, teaching youth about Treaty 10 and re-tracing the historical route and signing of Treaty 10.
