CROP REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 25TH

Hot weather this past week has advanced crop development in spring cereals and oilseeds, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization's weekly crop report.

Fall cereals are reported to be 85 per cent in good to excellent condition, with 56 per cent behind normal development. Spring cereals are reported to be 88 per cent in good to excellent condition, with 78 per cent behind. Oilseed crops are reported to be 80 per cent in good to excellent condition, with 74 per cent behind. Pulse crops are at 85 per cent in good to excellent condition, with 70 per cent of the crop behind normal development.

Topsoil moisture conditions on crop, hay and pasture land are generally adequate across the province, although areas of short and very short moisture have increased.

Insects, including grasshoppers, flea beetles, cutworms, and sawflies, were the main source of crop damage. Flooding, hail, wind, heat and drought stress, disease and gophers also damaged crops during the past week.

Haying operations made good progress during the past week and 41 per cent of the first-cut hay crop has been baled or put into silage. A second cut has begun in some areas in the southwest.

Pasture conditions are similar to the end of June, with 79 per cent of reporters rating pastures as good to excellent.

Livestock water supplies are also similar to the end of June, with 96 per cent reporting adequate supplies.
