REGINA FAMILY ACHIEVES HOMEOWNERSHIP WITH HELP FROM PROVINCE AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

A Regina family became homeowners today at a key ceremony hosted by Habitat for Humanity.  The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed $50,000 to help Habitat for Humanity build the home located at 1203 Rae Street.

The project was also sponsored by PCL Regina as part of an overall commitment by the PCL family of companies to give $1 million to five Habitat for Humanity affiliates across North America.

“This home, and other Habitat for Humanity builds, aligns with our province’s Plan for Growth, which is to secure a better life for all Saskatchewan people, to capture opportunities and to meet the challenges of a growing province,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said.  “On behalf of the province, I would like to thank Habitat for Humanity, PCL Regina, and all the volunteers and other community partners for working so hard to help another Saskatchewan family improve their quality of life with a home to call their own.”

“We are truly grateful for the support of our partners,” Habitat for Humanity Regina General Manager Chris Gdanski said.  “The need for affordable housing is greater than ever, and support from the community is key to providing low-income, hard-working families with the opportunity for homeownership.  The tremendous support we receive from the Provincial Government through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, as well as private companies, and individuals, allow us to continue to help families break the cycle of poverty.”

“PCL is very pleased to be part of the Habitat for Humanity team supporting our community and being part of building our great city of Regina,” PCL Construction Management Inc. Vice President and District Manager Kris Hildebrand, said.  “We feel honoured to have gotten to know the family and sincerely wish them all the best in their new home.”

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Nipawin and Humboldt to help build a total of 90 homes across the province.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.  Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable homeownership training and preparation sessions.
