CULTURAL AND RECREATIONAL COMPLEX RECEIVE FUNDS

A new multi-purpose cultural and recreational complex is being being built in Aberdeen. Construction of the facility is being made possible in part because of a $491,500 grant from the province's Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) to the Aberdeen and District Cultural and Recreational Foundation Incorporated.

The multi-million dollar complex will house the community's new skating and curling rinks, and will incorporate space for culture and recreation groups and organizations. Today's presentation of $368,600 is the first installment from the Community Initiatives Fund grant. The Aberdeen community has raised $1.2 million in cash for this project.

"Aberdeen's facility will foster community pride and ensure that culture and recreation continue to play a positive role in the lives of Saskatchewan citizens," Saskatoon Southeast MLA Pat Lorje said on behalf of Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford. "I am pleased that government support can build on community efforts."

The complex will operate year-round, offering programs and services to people of all ages. The outer shell of the Aberdeen Cultural and Recreation Complex will be complete shortly, followed by completion of the skating rink, the curling rink, and extra facilities. New services offered will include cultural dance, bowling, library, fitness programs, arts and crafts.

"The community has been working together on this project for many years. This has certainly been a community initiative," Building Committee Chairman Wayne Procyshyn. "The CIF grant, along with the community's dedication, has helped our committee to construct a landmark facility that will benefit seniors, adults, youth and children."

Established by the provincial government in 1997 to deliver a portion of casino profits back to communities, the CIF has provided more than 1,900 community groups with a total of almost $12 million. Formerly known as the Associated Entities Fund, the CIF is administered by Culture, Youth and Recreation.
