Voters in the 12 new school divisions will be going to the polls this Wednesday, June 15th. Voters are encouraged to participate in the upcoming elections as these new boards will have a significant role in the future of education in Saskatchewan.
The June 15th school board elections are the most active in recent history. Over 250 candidates are running with approximately 65 per cent of subdivisions holding elections. In the remainder, candidates have been acclaimed. In past elections there have been a higher percentage of positions acclaimed. New boards of education will be responsible for assessments that range from one billion to three billion dollars. Mill rates will move toward a provincial average providing greater equity for taxpayers around the province. The last major province-wide restructuring of school divisions occurred in 1944.
