PRINCE ALBERT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RECEIVES $100,000 FROM PROVINCE

A Habitat for Humanity partner family realized their dream of homeownership at a key ceremony held in Prince Albert today. The project received $50,000 in funding from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC).

An additional $50,000 is being provided by SHC to help construct another Habitat for Humanity home in Prince Albert, which will be undertaken by students from Carlton Comprehensive High School as the first student build in the community. Upon completion, a Habitat for Humanity partner family will live in the home.

"Homeownership brings many benefits, including family stability, a feeling of pride, and a sense of belonging within a neighbourhood and community," Municipal Affairs Minister Darryl Hickie said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "Affordable housing is a key priority of our government, and we are pleased that Habitat for Humanity and Carlton Comprehensive High School are stepping forward to help make a difference in the lives of Saskatchewan families in need."

"It is through partnerships with the province, community and individuals that allow Habitat for Humanity to provide a hand up to families in need," Habitat for Humanity President Morris Sawchuk said. "This is truly a collective effort to make homeownership a reality for families."

The funding is part of the $1 million investment announced by the province on April 1 to assist Habitat for Humanity's Saskatchewan affiliates in providing 20 homes for lower-income Saskatchewan families in housing need. This funding is on top of the $1 million that was announced by the province in March 2009.

Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 partnering hours to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes. This assists in the development of the Habitat for Humanity community and their neighbourhood.
