News Release - February 18, 2010 INTERACTIVE YOUNG WORKER READINESS CERTIFICATE COURSE NOW ONLINEThe Saskatchewan Government today launched a new, interactive Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course (YWRCC) to help 14 and 15 year olds be safe and successful in the workplace. Beginning March 31, 2010, 14 and 15 year olds must complete the course and obtain a certificate of completion in order to work. Employers will need to keep copies of their 14 and 15 year old employees' certificates on file. "The new interactive version of the course makes it easier for 14 and 15 year olds to learn about workplace safety, labour and employment standards, and their rights and responsibilities," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "I encourage young people to take the course and get their certificates early." The YWRCC is an important part of Saskatchewan's minimum age of employment restrictions announced last summer. Under the restrictions, 14 and 15 year olds must also get written consent from a parent or guardian, work no more than 16 hours during a school week, and must not work after 10 p.m. on a day preceding a school day or before the time that school starts on any school day. Employers must keep copies of their 14 and 15 year old employees' parent or guardian's consent, proof of age and YWRCC certificate of completion on file. Current legislation continues to restrict the employment of young people in casinos and in the sale, handling or service of alcohol, during school hours and in certain high-risk occupations.
