AMENDMENTS PROPOSED TO FURTHER PROTECT SASKATCHEWAN CONSUMERS

Amendments to The Consumer Protection Act were introduced today in the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly that will substantially improve protections available to consumers and strengthen confidence in the marketplace.

The amendments cover a broad range of goods and services and set out new rules regarding agreements that are entered into over the phone, by mail, or outside of the supplier's place of business. This Bill also includes agreements that involve future performance, delivery, or payments. These amendments also include new requirements for agreements regarding specific goods and services, such as travel clubs and personal development services (i.e. health clubs, talent and modelling agencies, sports and dance studios).

"Saskatchewan's marketplace has changed dramatically over the past number of years," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "The purchase of services makes up more than half of day-to-day transactions. Consumers are buying goods and services, in ways not contemplated a decade ago, and paying up front for them."

These amendments have been referred to the Standing Committee on Human Services to allow members of the Legislative Assembly to discuss the important proposals in this Bill and give the public an opportunity to directly participate in the legislative process. This process provides interested parties with an opportunity to make submissions and provide advice on the issues raised by the Bill. It will also allow the Committee to conduct hearings on the subject matter of the Bill and to report its observations, opinions, and recommendations.
