STUDENTS PROMOTE ENERGY EFFICIENCY THROUGH WORKS OF ART

Two Saskatchewan students are being recognized for their artistic talents as the provincial winners in this year's Canada-wide Energy and the Environment Art Contest.

Sabrina Moshenko, a Regina Grade 5 student from Wilfred Hunt Elementary School placed first from more than 400 provincial entries, for her alternative energy drawing.

Dylan Paquette attends Grade 5 classes at Caronport Elementary School. His image featuring an environmentally friendly superhero placed second in the province.

Saskatchewan elementary school students have been participating in the Energy and the Environment Art Contest since 1991. The Office of Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada manages the contest at the federal level and the Ministry of the Economy co-ordinates on the provincial level.

Provincial and territorial winners from across Canada, including Saskatchewan's first-place winner, can be viewed on the Natural Resources Canada website in the Kid's Club Art Gallery. Sabrina and Dylan's entries will also be featured in the Youth Art Gallery on the Climate Change Saskatchewan website.

"Students these days are very knowledgeable about energy resources and energy conservation," Minister responsible for Energy and Resources Tim McMillan said. "That knowledge is clearly exhibited in both Sabrina and Dylan's artwork and I congratulate the two of them and their fellow students on their creativity."

Awards and prize packages are presented to the Saskatchewan students in their respective schools and a $300 donation is made to the first-place winner's school resource centre.
