News Release - October 21, 2004 BUSINESS WORKSHOPS DESIGNED FOR \"YOU\"
Workshops designed especially for young entrepreneurs aged 18 to 30 form the new training component of the province's Youth Opportunities Unleashed (YOU) program.
Environment Minister David Forbes launched YOU's training phase today on behalf of Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline. Four introductory level workshops will focus on entrepreneurship, financing, managing and marketing a business. Saskatchewan Industry and Resources will co-ordinate delivery of the workshops in co-operation with various community economic development organizations. These workshops will serve as stepping stones to more extensive training opportunities offered by organizations such as the Community Futures Development Corporations, the Association of Regional Colleges, and Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan. "A small business loan is vital to help a young person get started on a dream. But just as important as the financing, is an awareness of what it takes to succeed in the business world," Forbes said. "In the future, more people will be self-employed. We want to ensure Saskatchewan youth are armed with all the resources they need to succeed in a very competitive marketplace. The YOU initiative, launched in June, offers three components to young entrepreneurs: loans, training and mentorship. Eligible young people can access Small Business Loans Association loans of up to $15,000 to assist in starting or expanding a business. "For anyone considering going into business for themselves, these workshops are a step in the right direction," Community Futures Partners of Saskatchewan Chair Bill Matlock said. "We are proud to be involved in this initiative and want to help young entrepreneurs reach their full potential." The third component of YOU, to be announced in 2005, will focus on partnering youth with mentors who can share the benefit of their business expertise. There are over 240 active Small Business Loans Associations throughout the province, each with access to a revolving line of credit up to $200,000 from Industry and Resources. Over $3.4 million was loaned during 2003/2004 to 487 start-up and non-traditional Saskatchewan businesses.
