SASKATCHEWAN SENIORS FISH FOR FREE WITH MORE EASE

Saskatchewan seniors, 65 years and older, will continue to fish for free, but can now do so with much more ease. The Ministry of Environment is dropping the requirement for Saskatchewan seniors to obtain an angling licence.

"Saskatchewan has some of the best fishing in the world," Environment Minister Nancy Heppner said. "I am pleased seniors are able to enjoy one of our most popular outdoor activities not only free of charge, but with the added convenience of being able to use their current ID."

Beginning May 2, which is the start of the 2009/10 angling season, Saskatchewan seniors are no longer required to obtain an angling licence each year. All that is now required is proof of residency and age (such as their provincial driver's licence), which must be shown to conservation officers or RCMP officers upon request.

Although fishing is free, seniors must meet all other fishing regulations, such as honouring catch limits and fishing seasons.

Seniors from out of province are still required to purchase angling licences.

This change will also result in cost savings and efficiencies in the Ministry of Environment.
