News Release - March 11, 2005 CELEBRATING A CENTENNIAL MILESTONE
The centennial spirit has captured community groups and individuals who are eager to show why the world could use a little more Saskatchewan during our centennial year.
The number of events submitted on the official Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 website at www.Sask2005.ca has reached 2,005. "Saskatchewan's centennial celebrations are about people and about our collective pride in our province," Centennial Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "It's incredible that we're just three months into our centennial year and Saskatchewan residents have already planned more than 2,005 events. Our centennial truly will be a year-long, provincewide celebration of 100 years of heart!" Miller Elementary Schoolin Melville had the honour of submitting event number 2,005. The school's celebration planning is already well underway and will be showcased on May 30th with special programs including a pioneer-themed oratory, potluck dinner, creative dance presentations and family baseball game. Students and staff will also prepare special messages to be included in a time capsule as part of the community centennial plans. "Our school is proud to celebrate Saskatchewan throughout this special anniversary," Miller Elementary School principal Jean Dales said. "The staff and students played a lead role in developing our centennial plans. We're looking forward to learning more about our great province and having a lot of fun throughout the year." In addition to school activities, sports days and town fairs occurring across the province, homecomings and reunions are popular events with over 300 already registered on the website. "Homecoming events are an important component of our centennial plans," Hagel said. "They provide an economic boost to local business and the tourism industry, generate a sense of community pride and give people another great reason to visit Saskatchewan. There is going to be a lot of socializing and parties going on throughout 2005 as we invite families and friends to join in our centennial celebrations." All events that are registered on www.Sask2005.ca are eligible to receive complimentary promotional items. This includes banner rolls, posters, place mats, conference folders, balloons, temporary tattoos, centennial stickers and other material to help promote and decorate events.
