SASKATCHEWAN'S COMMUNITY THEATRES TAKE CENTRE STAGE

The province's vibrant community theatre sector will bask in the spotlight during Saskatchewan Community Theatre Week, October 24th to October 30th, 2004.

"Community theatres are as integral to Saskatchewan communities as curling and Saskatoon pie," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "Saskatchewan Community Theatre Week honours the immense economic and social contributions that the province's community theatre associations and their members make to our province, particularly in rural areas."

Saskatchewan boasts more than 80 community theatre clubs, with well over 5,000 members who give freely of their time, energy and talents. Local theatre productions are often a community's primary fundraiser, helping raise funds for projects that range from hockey and curling rinks to programs for seniors and children.

"Community theatres have a major impact on our province," Beatty said. "They generate approximately $800,000 annually for the province's economy; help sustain our rural communities by raising funds for much-needed programs and facilities; and contribute to the sense of community spirit, which makes Saskatchewan such a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family."
