SASKATCHEWAN CELEBRATES NATIONAL FOREST WEEK AND TREE DAY

National Forest Week, from September 23 to 29 this year, is a time to celebrate the many ways that forests contribute to our quality of life. This year's theme, Healthy Forests - Healthy Communities, speaks to the essential role that forests play in environmental, economic and human health. Wednesday, September 26, is designated National Tree Day.

"Although the most recognizable prairie image may be that of our grain fields, more than half of Saskatchewan is forest," Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. "Our majestic boreal forest plays an important part of our province's history, culture and economy."

The Ministry of Environment is responsible for a variety of programs that ensures forests remain healthy, including renewal, insect, disease and wildfire management, inventory, licensing, compliance and policy development.

Saskatchewan forests support a growing forestry industry, with $400 million in annual product sales and directly employing 2,600 Saskatchewan people.

"Many Saskatchewan communities, families and individuals depend on forests for recreation and spiritual renewal, as well as their livelihood," Cheveldayoff said. "Although this is National Forest Week, I encourage all Saskatchewan residents to explore our province's northern forest throughout the year ahead."
