News Release - April 29, 2008 MUNICIPAL POLICE RECEIVE COMMISSIONSFor only the second time in Canadian history, 19 Saskatchewan municipal police officers received Commissioned Officer designations in a ceremony at Government House. "The dedication and professionalism of Saskatchewan's police community is highlighted by these commissions," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister Darryl Hickie said. Traditionally, the presentation of formal commissions has been made to RCMP officers in recognition of their achievement of a senior rank. With the 2005 amendments to The Police Act, 1990, Saskatchewan became the first province to present Lieutenant Governor's Commissions to senior ranking municipal police officers. Commissioned officers are charged with exercising command over their specific unit or service. Through their commission, they receive their authority for command directly from the Crown. -30- For more information, contact: Judy Orthner |
