RENTAL HOUSING SUPPLEMENT INCREASES RATES AND EXPANDS

Recent improvements to the Saskatchewan Rental Housing Supplement are ensuring even more people can benefit from this important program. Improvements include an increase to the maximum rates for the supplement, and an expansion of the program to people with intellectual, cognitive and mental health disabilities.

Introduced last April, the supplement helps to make it more affordable for low-income families and people with disabilities to live in safe, quality, accessible housing.

"We are very excited about this significant increase to the rental housing supplement rates," Community Resources Minister and Minister responsible for Disability Issues Buckley Belanger said. "What it means is people with disabilities could qualify for up to $150 a month, and families up to $151 a month. The maximum for a combined family and disability benefit is $227 a month. In this year's Budget, we are doing our part to ensure no one is left behind on the path to opportunity."

The program has also been expanded so people with intellectual, cognitive and mental health disabilities can now access the Saskatchewan Rental Housing Supplement. The supplement will help with the higher rental costs associated with acquiring the type of housing needed. The Department of Community Resources acknowledges the assistance of its community partners in designing this expansion to the program.

"The Saskatchewan Rental Housing Supplement supports the province's five-year, $200 million HomeFirst strategy which brings safe, affordable housing within reach for thousands of low-income families and individuals," Belanger added. "It is also a key part of our Building Independence strategy."
