RECORD MONTH FOR WHOLESALE TRADE AND MANUFACTURING SALES IN JANUARY

Wholesale trade jumped 7.1 per cent in January 2013 over last January according to a report released today by Statistics Canada.  Sales totaled $1.8 billion in January, which was the highest on record for the month.  This was the highest percentage increase among the provinces.  Nationally, wholesale trade was up only 2.6 per cent over this period.

“We’re starting off with some very positive economic signs in 2013 which is building confidence and attracting people and investment,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said.  “With continued growth in important sectors like wholesale trade and manufacturing, Saskatchewan's economy is set to have another great year, which will create jobs and increase business opportunities.”

Manufacturing sales were also up on a year over year basis, increasing by 5.5 per cent to $1.1 billion, the highest ever for the month of January.  This was the second highest percentage rise among the provinces.  On a national front, sales decreased by 1.6 per cent.

“Saskatchewan’s economy is moving forward at a steady pace that is keeping us ahead of most other provinces,” Boyd said.  “Our government is committed to maintaining that status and will do what we can to make sure we’ve got a competitive and attractive business environment.”
